When We Pray is an eight-image series that inspired my first book When We Pray: 8 Meditations on the Aesthetics of Prayer & the Spiritual Life. The images in the series were all downloaded over the course of a year during meditation practice.

When We Pray VIII: There is only Love was downloaded about six months after I thought the series was completed. During this time, I had already begun working on my first book and was considering the idea of a final chapter that would serve as a kind of concluding summary. This image helped me to understand that the entire series was a statement about divine love. The angelic being floating above the meditating figure is a guide and guardian who is praying with and for the human soul below it. The symbol beneath the angel is a West African symbol for divine love, while the symbol below the human figure is representative of earthly or human love. In this instance, the concept of divine and human love is re-enforced by the divine hands as they cocoon the figure in the shape of a heart. This shape is repeated in the aura surrounding the angelic being. Both the angelic and human have their heads surrounded by traditional symbols of spiritual power and purity – the halo and the aureole.
