Damon Powell - Artist & Theologian
I am an artist and theologian who resides in Oakland, California. My visual artistry expresses itself through my experimentation with watercolor or acrylic paints, and a subtractive drawing medium called scratchboard.
Most of my imagey is inspired by my exploration of various sacred texts. epiphanies that are downloaded through my meditation practice, or my own efforts to comprehend the role and movement of Spirit within the context of my own lived exeperience.
I have chosen to share these insights through the use of vivid color, line, and symbol, It is my hope that you find my images to be inspiring, didactic, and iconic
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
I obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the Graduate Theological Union with an interdsciplinary specialization in Black Theology, Aeshetics, and Art.
My Master of Divinity (MDiv) was obtained from Payne Theological Seminary with a primary emphasis in Theology, and a secondary emphasis in Pastoral Care and Counseling
As an undergraduate my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) came from the Kansas City Art Institute with a major in Illustration and a minor in Graphic Design.
My overarching vocational vision is to bring light and healing into the physical world. For me, this goal is expressed through a desire to emphasize the role and presence of the spiritual within our daily lived experience.
My primary means of doing this is through the use of creativity. I employ the visual arts, writing, and the spoken word as means of reminding others that the spiritual dimensions of our lives are present in every experience. If we remain grounded and aware, we will always find the light and assistance we need to navigate every situation.
I recently published my first book, "When We Pray: 8 Meditations on the Aesthetics of Prayer & the Spiritual LIfe" in February of 2019.
When We Pray is a total package experience that features insightful, thought-provoking essays that are accompanied by beautiful, well-crafted imagery. To purchase your copy click the image below
